Divine Women - Part 6

6:30pm, Sunday 25 November

Historian Bettany Hughes concludes her journey tracing the hidden history of women in religion with the story of St Hilda of Whitby, an important figure in the conversion of England to Christianity.
In Episode 6, the series finale, we learn how Emperor Wu Zetian's support for Buddhism in the Far East and her faith in new printing technology revolutionised Chinese society 1300 years ago.

Bettany also explores the history of St. Hilda, an Abbess who presided over the Synod of Whitby which decided when Christians in Britain celebrate Easter and cemented the islands' links with Rome and Europe.

If you missed last Sunday's episode Divine Women - Part 5 you can watch it on our website or on iView. Divine Women - Part 5 will also be repeated at the special time of 3.00pm on Sunday 25 November. Compass repeats will return to 1.30pm Tuesdays on ABC1 after that.

Next week, in A Place By The Sea, Compass spends two weeks on Sydney's northern beaches at Stewart House which, for more than 80 years, has provided respite care for youngsters in times of crisis and need, and in some cases changed lives.

Look out for our Compass Special: Churches on Trial screening on Tuesday, 11 December at 8pm on ABC1. Geraldine Doogue investigates the child sexual abuse crisis in Australian churches over the past 20 years from our groundbreaking 1992 program The Ultimate Betrayal to Julia Gillard's Royal Commission announcement.

Episodes of Compass programs can be viewed online for three months after broadcast, except for acquired programs which are only available for two weeks after transmission.
