The Daily Planet With Lucky Oceans Monday to Thursday 11:00pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/dailyplanet/ The String Contingent - 'Talk' This Monday, Lucky deals into Talk. String Contingent's new, third album Talk is full of lively instrumental pieces that tell stories about making houses, dovetail joints or tea and toast, our multiple perceptions of time, family, goats and musical conversations. Catch this excellent trio of double bass, guitar and violin on their extensive upcoming tour before they take a break to study. Coming from Scottish Fiddle, Heavy Metal and Classical traditions respectively, violinist Chris Stone, Guitarist Graham McLeod and bassist Holly Downes create a joyful, ever-shifting and witty sound as they explore the way their instruments interact. We'll also salute dobro innovator and all-around good guy Mike Auldridge, who died last month. The Inside Sleeve Robbie Buck Monday to Friday 3pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/insidesleeve/ The Live Set With Alice Keath Friday 8pm Repeated: Sunday 4pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/liveset/ Sonic Sessions with Shane Nicholson and Lucky Oceans Since 2007, in the intimate, conducive-to-sharing courtyard of the Fremantle Arts Centre, Lucky Oceans has been hosting a series called Sonic Sessions in which he plays with singer/songwriters and talks to them about their musical passions and methods. During February, The Live Set will feature recent Sonic Sessions with Paul Kelly and Shane Nicholson. Shane Nicholson grew up in a music loving household in Brisbane. His parents' wide range of musical tastes made it easy for him to go from fronting indie-rock band Pretty Violet Stain to a solo career and country collaborations with his wife Kasey Chambers. Shane is an all-rounder - a strong singer and multi-instrumentalist and a prolific songwriter with a finely-tuned ear for finding a new angle in a song. In this program, Shane explains how he writes his songs and Shane and Lucky enjoy each other's playing and company. The Music Show With Andrew Ford Saturday 10am Repeated: Saturday 10pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/musicshow/ Richard Tognetti picks up a six-string Violectra violin for Brett Dean's new piece 'Electric Preludes' and the Australian Chamber Orchestra's February tour. Bass player from the Sunnyboys, Richard Burgmann talks history and the present as he tours with Elvis Costello and Baby et Lulu interpretent des chanson en direct. The Rhythm Divine With Geoff Wood Sunday 6am Repeated: Monday 1am http://www.abc.net.au/rn/rhythmdivine/ Mike Scott: The Pan Within One of the great British songwriters of our time, Mike Scott is also one of rock music's survivors. Since forming The Waterboysin London in 1983 he's outlasted most of his peers, and the winds of fashion, to become one of the world's best-loved musicians with classic songs like 'The Pan Within', 'The Whole of the Moon' and 'Fisherman's Blues'. The Waterboys' early signature sound on albums like A Pagan Place and This is the Sea became known as the Big Music, combining spiritual enquiry with an ecstatic rock style. Mike then moved to Ireland where his interest in Celtic roots music led to their best-selling album, Fisherman's Blues, in 1988. But Mike Scott is not your average rock star, as you'll hear. A deeply spiritual man, Mike has pursued a life-long interest in the Western esoteric tradition, sometimes known as the Perennial Wisdom. He also spent extended periods in the mid-90s at the influential spiritual community known as the Findhorn Foundation in the north of Scotland, a centre for spiritual and ecological enquiry, part of his continuing search for an ageless wisdom beyond the world's spiritual systems and religions. Sound Quality With Tim Ritchie Friday 11:00pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/soundquality/ Tim's been saving up a few treats for the first program of the new schedule (and new broadcast time of 2305 on Friday nights), and I'm please to say they sparkle!. Enjoy the mystery of the Wharff99 remix of Meat Kiosk's The IPCRESS Symphony and wonder in the sonic delight of our favourite Turkish musician, Erdem Helvacioglu, as he teams up with an American artist to make some very night time sounds. The Weekend Planet With Doug Spencer Sunday 10pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/weekendplanet/ Custodo Castelo: 'Inventus' Custódio Castelo is the highest-profile living master of Portguese fado's emblematic instrument. The guitarra portuguesa has an arresting appearance and a unique sound; the so-called 'fado guitar' is not in fact a guitar. For many years the preferred accompanist of some of fado's greatest singers, Custódio Castelo is now emphasising his role as virtuoso instrumentalist and composer. Into The Music Saturday 4pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/intothemusic/ Get Up Stand Up - The politics of song from the Woodford Folk Festival 2012 Music and politics can be a force to be reckoned with, and songwriters often ignite the spirit and create soundtracks for generations of change-makers. But where do politics and song writing intersect? Do political songs drive change or do they just document the times in which they're written? An impressive line-up of songwriters gathered at the Woodford festival over Xmas and New Year last year and discussed these and other questions with forum host Sandy McCutcheon. Program one features Shellie Morris, Chris Bailey (The Saints) and Tim Levinson (Urthboy/The Herd).
