Greetings from ABC Classic FM as we begin celebrations of Verdi's bicentenary with a long weekend showcasing the great man's work. This Australia Day also marks the arrival of Rewind, ABC Classic FM's online Australian music collection as you'll see below. Enjoy.
A VERDI CELEBRATION THIS LONG WEEKEND
Highlight

Join us over the Australia Day long weekend as we kick off celebrations of Verdi's bicentennial year with a fine feast of his music, including a LIVE broadcast from the Sydney Opera House on Sunday. Highlights include:

1pm Saturday - the magical 1963 Sutherland-Bergonzi recording of La Traviata

2pm Sunday - Opera Australia's new production of A Masked Ball - LIVE from the Sydney Opera House

7pm Sunday - the Met Opera's current production of Il Trovatore

1pm Monday - Graham Abbott presents an afternoon of Verdi highlights

As we celebrate Australia Day, ABC Classic FM is launching an updated version of its Australian Music Collection. Rewind is an ever-expanding online collection of Australian classical and experimental music drawn from the ABC's vast archive of music recordings. KEYS TO MUSIC CONCERT IN ADELAIDE
Highlight

2013 isn't all about Verdi. This year also marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten . You're invited to join Graham Abbot and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for a special Keys To Music Concert looking at Britten's Suite on English Folk Tunes. The music will be explored from the inside out and performed in its entirety.

There are two performances: 11am and 1pm on Wednesday 30 January in the Grainger Studio, Adelaide. Visit the ASO for details and bookings.

Highlight

Sally-Anne Russell

We head back to Hobart to hear Mezzo Soprano Sally-Anne Russell in a Sunday Live from last July. Sally-Anne is a guest principal with Opera Australia and State Opera Companies, the Symphony Australia Orchestras and is a recitalist and recording artist. She is joined by violist William Newbery and pianist Andrea Katz in this concert.

Afternoon Concert - German Symphony Orchestra Berlin
Conducted by Francesco Angelico and featuring Daniela Koch (flute) and Emmanuel Ceysson (harp), we'll hear Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ibert's Flute Concerto, Ginastera's Harp Concerto and Ravel's Mother Goose Suite.

Keys to Music - A Musician's Musician: A Tribute to Sir Charles Mackerras
On Australia Day, Keys To Music pays tribute to the great Australian conductor Sir Charles Mackerras who passed away in July 2010.

Sunday 27 January - 2pm
Sunday Afternoon Concert - A Masked Ball LIVE
As part of our Verdi celebration weekend, we cross live to the Joan Sutherland Theatre of Sydney Opera House for Opera Australia's production of Verdi's A Masked Ball.

Monday 28 January - 8pm
Evening Concert - Australia Ensemble
In the Sir John Clancy Auditorium, University of NSW, the Australia Ensemble and tenor Paul McMahon perform Mozart's Flute Quartet No 3 in C, Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Profiles from China, d'Rivera's Aires Tropicales and Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor.

Tuesday 29 January -1pm
Afternoon Concert - Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp 2013
Recorded earlier this month in Elder Hall, University of Adelaide, today's concert includes James Ledger's Arcs and Planes, Stravinsky's Apollo, Ballet and Brahms orch Schoenberg's Piano Quartet No 1 in G minor.

Wednesday 30 January -8pm
Evening Concert - Sydney Youth Orchestra
In the Sydney Town Hall last year flautist Kate Proctor features in tonight's performance of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet: Suite No 2, Feld's Concerto for flute, string orchestra, piano, harp and percussion, and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances.

Thursday 31 January - 1pm
Afternoon Concert - Qld Youth Orchestras Celebrate John Curro's 80th Birthday
Recorded in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre Concert Hall last month, QYS Alumni Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Symphony and pianist Stephen Emmerson perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 4 in G and R Strauss' An Alpine Symphony.

Friday 1 February - 8pm
Evening Concert - Port Fairy Spring Festival: Australian String Quartet
In St John's Church, Port Fairy, the Australian String Quartet performs Richard Meale's Cantilena Pacifica, Gorecki's String Quartet No 1, Op 62 (Already it is Dusk) and Haydn's String Quartet in B flat, Op 76 No 4 (Sunrise).
