NewsMail Afternoon Edition Sat 15 Dec, 2012 Top Stories More Top Stories » 28 dead in US school shooting Vigils are being held across the US as communities struggle to come to terms with one of the worst school shootings in which a gunman killed 20 young children and seven adults in the small community of Newtown, Connecticut. Carrying four weapons and wearing a bulletproof vest, the gunman opened fire on the mostly kindergarten students at Sandy Hook Elementary School shortly after 9:30am (local time). Police say he was later found dead at the scene but they cannot confirm his identity as they launch an extensive investigation into the horrific shooting. Medical experts are now working through the night to formally identify the victims - most of them aged between five and 10 years old.
