Top Dog The kelpie has won fame far beyond Australian stockyards and the wide open paddocks where it normally works. Every June long weekend the western Victorian town that claims to be the breed's birthplace, holds a festival in its honour. While you might have thought there wasn't too much more we could add to kelpie folklore, Tim Lee's recently discovered an intriguing new twist to this age-old tale.

A group of scientists, which has based itself in outback South Australia, has devised a system of growing crops which doesn't rely on that diminishing freshwater supply.
