NB This is The Night Air's final first-run episode. From next week until the end of January 2013 we will see the programme out with our Best Of season.
Out in the Open is a modern re-visioning of the story of Plato's Cave, only in today's world the cave is not a physical space but rather the construct that is our mediated world - the one we engage in through the media as a vast net of transmissions to the masses.
Artist and academic Colin Black enhances our sensorium by grafting giant ears to our ear canals so that we can step out of our caves and eavesdrop on locations and conversations right across the vast Australian continent but still within the matrix of the radio medium.
Without leaving the studio in Sydney, and with the help of the ABC Open team in collecting interviews, Black takes us 'outside the dave', to shared experiences, to deciper fact from fiction.
