Northern Breed
There is a new breed of cattle emerging in Australia's top end. At Brunette Downs in the Northern Territory, there is normally about 100,000 head grazing on the station's vast plains mostly Brahman cattle, well adapted to the north's climatic extremes. But the need for greater production is quite literally changing the complexion of Australia's northern herd. A new style of hybrid beasts known as "composites" are pushing Brahmans off their long-held turf.

Special Spuds For years the humble spud has been viewed as a simple, even boring side dish. But that may soon change with many in the industry attempting to give mash a makeover. A host of new varieties of potato is hitting the supermarket shelves and the quest to find a more alluring spud is not only extremely competitive but costly as well.

Milk Money Heavily discounted home brand milk is clearly popular with consumers, but at what cost to dairy farmers? The effects are probably being felt hardest in Western Australia, where the industry is drying up to the point where fresh milk had to be trucked across the Nullarbor this year to make up a market shortfall. A new report suggests foreign investment could be the answer, but that's sparked a lively debate in the west about what sort of investment and just how much is needed?

Fresh is Best One of the most difficult parts of farming is getting started. It takes money to set up any business, but primary production is more capital intensive than most which is why so many farms are family businesses that pass on from generation to generation. However, farming isn't only large-scale agriculture: there are lots of ways to grow food and two Victorian-based entrepreneurs think they've hit a winning formula.
