Millions celebrate as world welcomes 2013

Millions of people around the world have welcomed in the New Year.

Australian cities ushered in 2013 with a wave of dazzling firework displays as the clock struck midnight across the country.

More than 1.5 million people gathered in Sydney to watch as seven tonnes of fireworks lit up the sky above the Harbour Bridge.

The $6.6 million fireworks display was curated by pop star Kylie Minogue, who designed the colour scheme and soundtrack.

Large crowds also gathered along Melbourne's Yarra River and in other towns and cities across the country.

Elsewhere, as many as 100,000 people turned out for Hong Kong's biggest fireworks display, while London and other major European cities will welcome the New Year later this morning.
