The Rhythm Divine With Geoff Wood Sunday 6am Repeated: Monday 1am http://www.abc.net.au/rn/rhythmdivine/ The Divine Night At the heart of the program is a luminous choral meditation on the word Alleluia, (Praise God) from the young American composer Eric Whitacre. Now famous for his Virtual Choir recordings, Whitacre describes himself as neither an atheist nor a Christian, but his settings of Christian liturgical texts on his new album Water Night are among the best recordings I've heard this year. The festive season doesn't just mean Christmas of course, with Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, recently ended and Solstice celebrations being held this past week, the Winter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere, Summer in the South, which is where we start with the Victorian singer of mythic tales and pagan-inspired song, Louisa John-Krol. But we do sing in the Christmas season with folk song, including a traditional counting carol from Ireland 'The Seven Rejoices of Mary' sung by English group Oddfellows, and a child's lullaby from the Lazio region of Italy performed by L'Arpeggiata. We end with a classic Christmas carol from the soul queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas. Sound Quality With Tim Ritchie Friday 11:20pm http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/soundquality/ Four Tet - DJ set We've not had a Solid Steel Radio Show on Sound Quality for some time, and as I was trawling their info a set came up selected and played by Keiran Hebden (Four Tet), so I grabbed it.
