Mon, 17 Dec 2012 06:44:56 +1100

More than 3,000 people are sheltering in evacuation centres as Cyclone Evan bears down on Fiji's northern islands.

The storm has already caused widespread damage in Samoa, claiming at least four lives.

Fiji's Meteorological Office says Evan is expected to be about 90km west of Nadi around midnight local time.

It says the Yasawa and Mamanuca, and the west of Viti Levu will feel the worst of the cyclone, warning of hurricane force winds of 185 kilometres an hour, with gusts up to 270 kilometres an hour.

Air Pacific, Jetstar and Pacific Sun have cancelled all flights out of Fiji on Monday, and Fiji's Reserve Bank Governor has ordered all commercial banks closed until further notice.
