The music they play draws on ideas from Carnatic music, Hindustani music and jazz. In Sandy's words "In many ways our vocabularies differ. However, a love of rhythmic vibrancy; subtle and ecstatic moods; and the spontaneity of improvised music unites us. Sandy Evans performed alongside tabla player Maharshi Raval, Sitar player and vocalist Sarangan Sriranganathan, and double bassist Brett Hirst at the Adelaide Festival Centre's OzAsia Festival in September, and Music Deli was there to catch the performance. As well, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens bring church to a classic Stones' song, there's blues-gospel singer & slide guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps whose latest album draws on the Book of Jonah, and a former Midnight Oiland a former Violent Femme who get together on stage for the world's favourite hymn. And in a preview of next week, we hear a new song from singer-songwriter Heather Frahn, founder of the Conscious Music Movement. Feature producer Robyn Ravlich travelled to Mexico City and to Oaxaca where indigenous traditions lie close to the surface to experience and record this powerful and beautiful life-affirming festival, which melds ancient Amerindian rituals for welcoming back the dead for one joyful day a year with the Catholic observances of All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
