"Tomatoes so hard if you put 6 stitches around their edge they could be used cricket balls", mused one caller to today's talkback. That and carrots that taste like real carrots might be motivation enough to have a go growing your own food.
Food security and sustainability are the big picture motivations – I'll be reading Michael Mobbs' book Sustainable Food for the data that has convinced him it makes a difference. Loving your stories of triumph and tribulation of growing produce. Eileen writes: "I love eating everything from my back yard. Since September I have been taking part in a survey of backyard food production, and have been amazed at just how much money I have saved - hundreds of dollars". And Tanana writes: "I live in Brisbane and find it very hard to successfully grow any veg or fruit. Between the possums, grasshoppers, fruit fly and Bronze Orange bugs very little survive. We even build a cage to protect the citrus and herbs. But a tomato plant started to grow from outside the cage and gave us plenty of cherry tomatoes".

Don't forget our wonderful weekly foodie show for more on all things fresh and edible, RN First Bite, with Michael McKenzie on Saturdays at 1pm.
Catch you on Monday for a memoir of things best forgotten, and why Mission Australia and St Vinnies are making the case for a liberal arts education – intellectual nourishment can be as important as the essentials of food and shelter! Which reminds me don't forget to check out the latest from our education portal; edpod http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/edpod/
Enjoy your weekend.
