80 YEARS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC AND THE ABC
Highlight

Resurrection Symphonies: 80 Years of Classical Music and the ABC begins this Sunday at Midday. Presented by Martin Buzacott, this four-part series traces the proud, often colourful and always inspiring history of classical music on the ABC.

Today's program, "1932-1945. Depression, War and the Civilising Power of Music", focuses on the work of three uniquely gifted and visionary men - Charles Moses, Bernard Heinze and William James. The series continues at the same time for the following three Sundays.

Hobart City Wind Symphony - 6 January 3pm

The Hobart City Band has 5 ensembles, with the Wind Symphony being the main group that includes woodwinds as well as brass and percussion. In this performance for Sunday Live in July last year, we hear music by Whitacre, Grainger, and Tasmanian composer Don Kay. There will be even more music, as 40+ players take to the stage to entertain you.

Evening Concert - Queensland Symphony Orchestra
Pianist John Fisher features in this performance from the Queensland Performing Arts Centre Concert Hall conducted by Eivind Aadland. We'll hear Grieg's In Autumn, Overture Op 11, Liszt's Totentanz, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4 in F minor Op 36.

Saturday 5 January - 9am
Keys to Music - The Music of Leonard Bernstein
One of the 20th century's major musical figures, Leonard Bernstein (1918-90) is mainly remembered today for his conducting, but Bernstein himself perhaps wanted to be better remembered as a composer. Graham Abbott surveys Bernstein's compositions and discovers a fascinating, and underrated, body of music.

The Past And The Curious Salutes The Great Songwriters. Part one: Jerome Kern
A pioneer of the musical theatre responsible for one of the oldest enduring song standards, They Didn't Believe Me (1914), Jerome Kern went on to compose the music for Show Boat (1928) and for the Astaire/Rodgers musical Swing Time (1936).

Afternoon Concert - Members of the Sydney Symphony
At the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, the Sydney Symphony Fellowship Alumni, Sydney Symphony Fellowship Ensemble and Oliver She (piano) perform Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino: Overture, Haydn's Piano Concerto in D Hob.XVIII:11 and Schubert's Symphony No 5 in B flat D485.

Wednesday 9 January - 8pm
Evening Concert - 2012 Adelaide International Guitar Festival
At the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide Festival Centre, we hear guitarists Leonard and Slava Grigorian perform Tchaikovsky arr Edward Grigoryan The Seasons, Op 37b. Also, Edin Karamazov (archlute and guitar) performs Zamboni's Sonata, Brouwer's An Idea and  Piazzolla's The Seasons: Winter in Buenos Aires.

Thursday 10 January - 1pm
Afternoon Concert - ASO with Stephen Hough
Acclaimed pianist Stephen Hough and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 2 in G, Op 44 and Symphony No 6 in B minor, Op 74 (Pathetique) at the Adelaide Town Hall.

Friday 11 January - 8pm
Evening Concert - SSO International Pianists: Angela Hewitt
Recorded in the City Recital Hall, Angel Place, Sydney, tonight's concert features acclaimed pianist Angela Hewitt performing s program of Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV988: Nos 1-20, Goldberg Variations, BWV988: Nos 21-31 and Bach arr Hess' Cantata No 147, Herz und Mund (Heart and Voice): Jesu, joy of man's desiring.
