Witnesses have described horrific scenes at the Sandy Hook Elementary School as parents rushed to find their children. US president Barack Obama wiped away tears as he delivered an address from the White House describing the crime as "heinous" and saying "our hearts are broken today". US media is reporting the alleged gunman is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza who also shot his father and then his mother who was a teacher at the school. Follow our live coverage as events unfold.
