Divine Women - Part 4

6:30pm, Sunday 11 November

Award winning historian Bettany Hughes continues her epic journey back in time to trace the hidden and often controversial history of women in religion.
In Episode 4, she heads to Ancient Rome where the fate of the civilisation lay in the hands of six sacred virgins.

She returns to those crucial early years of Christianity where she finds evidence that overturns centuries of Church teaching and challenges the belief that women should not be priests.

Next week in Part 5 of Divine Women, Bettany Hughes discovers how the Dark Ages was a golden age for a few remarkable women: Theodora, a prostitute who became an empress; the wives of the prophet Mohammad; and, Wu Zetien - a courtesan who became the only woman to rule China as Emperor.

If you missed last Sunday's episode Divine Women - Part 3 you can watch it on our website or on iView. Compass is also repeated on Tuesdays at 1.30pm on ABC1.

Episodes of Compass programs can be viewed online for three months after broadcast, except for acquired programs which are only available for two weeks after transmission.
